Within the last year, we have seen an increase in the use of augmented reality (AI). It has been the focus and has taken over the world but also when it comes to design. It is simple and easy to use. You can simply put in a prompt for what you want and then within a few seconds, you can get a response and hope that it is something you wanted. Whether it is thoughtful and generated with what you intended is very subjective. It also is based on how well you know how to use this tool. In contrast, human design creates a connection between the artist and the viewer.
AI Design
The use of AI is something that is ever-changing and is probably changing even as you read this article. With that, it is something we must keep learning how to use it to best. We are constantly learning and adapting to the changes that are coming so quickly. We are receiving so much information so quickly that we are all learning how to use the tools given to the best of our abilities. AI acts as an enabler providing designers the tools and capabilities to push the boundaries of their creativity. It is a tool that we can use to help us create. It allows artists to help create something that we would not see otherwise without the aid of AI. The key word in this is it is a tool. We should not rely heavily on this as it can provide different results.
Human Design
If you ask most artist, the reason they create, or design is a way for them to connect or express emotion. It allows for the artist to create without the use of words. For example, when I think of the famous painting The Scream by Edvard Munch, I can feel the emotion the artist must have been feeling when this was created. You can sense it with the brush strokes and the use of muted colors.
Summary
The use of AI in design should be used with caution. It can be used as a tool to help but should never fully replace the connection you would receive from an artist. As a graphic designer, the use of AI can help you come up with new and creative ideas but should never be relied on. We can embrace the advancements of technology, but I hope we can still get back to the idea of connection from designs created with human interaction in mind. As discussed, the use of AI is changing, so while it is changing it isn’t perfect. It’s not the end of art and art. While what you get because of AI you have to be able to understand the nature of what you want as a result. It is hard to get a result for something you have no idea what you want as a result.
